Rare Original WW1 Royal Navy Chaplain Bronze Badge

Rare Original WW1 Royal Navy Chaplain Bronze Badge

£375.00

This is a rare original bronze badge issued to a Chaplain in the Royal Navy. These badges were first issued in February 1918 as the chaplains did not have a uniform and no easy means of identifying them, the badge was apparently worn on the right lapel of their jacket or on the right hand side of the jacket if it had no collar. It was abolished in 1923. There were far fewer Navy chaplains than Army chaplains, in 1914 there were only 129 and during the First World War another 200 were recruited just for the war.

The badge is 61 mm in height and 48 mm in width. The words CHAPLAIN ROYAL NAVY surround the Naval cross and the Naval crown is on the top. On the reverse are lugs. There is slight damage to the crown but this is still a lovely rare badge.
